About The Artist

Mourad Belouadi is a brilliant multi-instrumentalist, photographer, and beautiful soul, currently based in Sale, Morocco, where he was born and raised.  He told us how his father - a Gnawa musician at the time - had traveled from the southeastern Moroccan desert town of Tinzoulin to Sale, in search of urban prosperity.  His guembri (traditional bass instrument) kept him company along the journey, but upon arriving in Sale, he immediately gave it away and never looked back.  Mourad felt the call from an early age to carry the torch his father had left behind.  He studied and traveled with Gnawa masters and eventually embarked on a solo path - one which remains steeped in the Gnawa tradition, but also embraces an ever-growing world of new musical influences.  He is constantly picking up and mastering new instruments, at times even building them himself.  We called him "Magic Fingers" because of his incredible ability to turn any object he laid his hands on into amazing music.  Even more remarkable is his photography work, considering his visual impairment.  Mourad was born without the gift of sight, perhaps a blessing in disguise which allowed him to develop a musical ear to a remarkable degree.  But at the age of 11, after a few unsuccessful attempts, he finally underwent an operation which allowed him to see the world for the first time.  And while he remains significantly visually impaired, he has developed a photographic eye more striking than most photographers.
